An advocacy group in Kabba, GirlUp, on Wednesday has called for improved menstrual care and awareness among female secondary school students. The advocacy Group, comprising students from the Department of Mass Communication, Kogi State University, Kabba, carried out a community advocacy aimed at equipping young girls with essential life skills.

The programme which held at Government Science Secondary School, Okedayo featured presentations by health-care professionals. A registered nurse, Ms. Olubunmi Sunday, facilitated the first session, educating the students on the menstrual cycle while demonstrating the proper use and disposal of sanitary pads. Olubunmi stressed the importance of hygiene and advocated for abstinence from casual sex as the safest option for girls of their age who desire healthy life.

The second session, led by Abah Gloria, focused on building self-confidence and promoting personal safety. She encouraged the girls to trust their instincts, speak up when they feel unsafe, and uphold self-respect. Her presentation included an interactive segment with a song reinforcing the message of abstinence.

The event was well received, with both students and teachers expressing appreciation for the impactful initiative. The Head Girl of the school, Iwalewa precious delivered a heartfelt vote of thanks.

High point of the event was the distribution of sanitary pads which according to organizers were part of efforts to promote menstrual dignity.
